Winter Sports Awards Night

1 min read

Paul Snow, one of M-A’s athletic directors, gave a speech during the winter sports awards night on March 7 concluding soccer, basketball, and wrestling. M-A sports teams have achieved four league titles, four individual CCS titles, one team CCS Championship and one state title.

The boys basketball teams were the first public school teams to qualify into the Open Division of CCS, becoming “comeback kids” (by coming back from double digits late in games), and having 20-game winning streaks. The freshman team finished 3rd in league with 10 wins and 2 losses. The junior varsity team finished the season 18-5 and ended the 2019 year tied for first place in the Peninsula Athletic League South Division. The varsity team’s final overall record is 24-5, achieving the best high school basketball team record in San Mateo County, and “will go down as one of the best [teams] in Bear history.”

The girls basketball teams had overall records of 12-12 and 19-11 with major potential in the future. The JV team had 10 freshmen and three sophomores, indicating an opportunity for growth despite “seeing it as a major challenge” this year.

The boys soccer team won their fourth consecutive game this season, ended league with a record of 9-4, good enough to beat first place Sequoia, and had a 5-1 victory against Aragon. The varsity team went to the playoffs and reached the Semifinals, with many younger players getting significant playing time.

The girls soccer team ended the season 10-7 with one tie and a fourth place league finish. Some key highlights included beating Menlo 9-0, beating Aragon, and Burlingame 1-0. The win against Aragon led the Bears to be league champs.

The boys varsity wrestling team had a record of 5-0, taking first place in PALs, with players winning titles of league champions for their weight classes. M-A wrestlers claimed four medals in the JV division of the PAL championships. Songi Eke, Julian Garza, and Joshua Meyers were league champions in their respective weight classes.

The girls varsity wrestling team won 273 out of 434 matches and achieved its third consecutive CCS title. The team placed second out of 212 teams in CIF State finals. Fola Akinola won first at state, Evelyn Calhoon placed third, Angie Bautista placed sixth, and Abby Ericon placed seventh.
