Girls Basketball Trounces Woodside on Senior Night

1 min read

It was a perfect Senior Night for the Bears as they continued their historic run with an easy home win over Woodside, 56-29. After the Bears lost their first game of the season to St. Mary’s, they have won their last 21 games giving them a lot of confidence with the Peninsula Athletic League (PAL) Tournament and the Central Coast Section (CCS) playoffs looming.

Coach Markisha Coleman was especially pleased with her team’s play. “I think we played really well. Our team really loves our seniors. They are a really good group. We came out with energy and everybody came in and played well, so overall it was a great game.”

With senior Ilana Baer in control of the offense, the Bears had a 19-12 lead after the first quarter which was largely due to junior Carly McLanahan’s three-point shooting and junior Greer Hoyem’s offensive presence down low.

McLanahan had several more threes in the second period and with help from senior Ofa Sili, the Bears had a commanding 34-20 lead at the half.

The Bears held Woodside to only 9 points in the second half even without their potent full-court press, which they used to gain a lead in the first half.

Even with Woodside senior Leandra Quijano’s 16 points, the Bears proved to be too much too handle. McLanahan finished with a game-high 17 points and had a red-hot shooting night with 5 threes.

Hoyem added 12 and was unstoppable in the paint. Senior Kyra Sheeper added 4 and senior Megan Sparrow had 8 for M-A in their dominating win.

Even with the PAL Tournament and CCS looming, Coleman does not want her team to start thinking about the future. “We have one more league game with Hillsdale on Tuesday so we are going to focus on that. Every game and every practice we are just working to get better.”

Come out and support M-A as they travel to Hillsdale on Tuesday night and wrap up their PAL regular season. Congrats to these Bears as they continued their historic run on a historic night.
